Member Education

The brothers of the Eta Epsilon Chapter at John Carroll University recognize that a proper understanding and education of Beta Theta Pi history, lore, and spirit are essential to creating men of principle that are "Gentlemen, Leaders, and Scholars." For this reason, the leaders of our chapter strive to create an environment that provides for optimal learning for our new members so that they can best attain knowledge of the Beta Spirit.

After our Chapter inducts our newest members following the recruitment process, they become engaged in an education process and begin to assimilate into the group by attending meetings, social functions, retreats, service projects, and more. Our member education process seeks to teach our new members the values, history, and organization of Beta Theta Pi, as well as the history and structure of the Eta Epsilon Chapter. They read assigned chapters from Sons of the Stars and take quizzes during their weekly meetings to ensure that they are truly learning about Beta lore. By the end of their process, the new members are expected to know certain quotes and facts about the Fraternity and its history. Our hope is that once a new member is initiated that he has a full understanding and devotion to the incredible Beta Theta Pi tradition.

As a fraternity, Beta Theta Pi is a group of men bonded into brotherhood; however, we refuse to accomplish this in the stereotypical way of hazing. The JCU Chapter Risk Management Policy clearly states our strong opposition to hazing. We believe in building Men of Principle, not tearing them down, and we believe that hazing diminishes a man and his strengths. We strive to accentuate a man's strengths by molding principled men for principled lives through a completely positive member education program.

For the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi, the best way to educate new and collegiate members and strengthen our brotherhood is through adherence to and practice of the Ritual. We follow all Ritual ceremonies according to the guidelines set forth by the General Fraternity and take time to regularly reaffirm and discuss the obligations of membership during our chapter meetings.

Further questions about the new member education process can be directed to our Member Educator, Tim Ficke, or our Member Education Advisor, Joel Mullner.
