Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I become part of the John Carroll University Greek System?
A: The best way to become a part of the Greek System at John Carroll is to register and attend events organized by John Carroll Greek Life during Formal Recruitment Week, held each September. Beta also sponsors "informal recruitment" in the fall during the week immediately following Formal Recruitment Week, as well as in the spring during late January.

Q: What is expected of a new member of Beta Theta Pi?
A: A new member of the Eta Epsilon Chapter is expected to follow the Chapter Constitution and Bylaws throughout his new member education process. Every new member becomes a representative of the Fraternity and as such should conduct himself in an appropriate manner at all times. A new member is expected to complete an eight-week New Member Education Program designed to teach the history of the Fraternity in order to prepare him for his Initiation.

Q: Does Beta have a grade requirement?
A: Yes. In order to become a new member of Beta, you must have a minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA. (For a first-semester freshman or transfer student, the GPA from your past institution will be considered instead.) Any collegiate member who fails to maintain a Semester GPA of 2.7 is not in good academic standing with the chapter and will meet regularly with the Scholarship Chairman to develop a plan to improve his grades.

Q: What kind of time commitment is associated with becoming a member?
A: It all depends on your level of involvement with the Fraternity. We understand that many of those interested in Beta are already extremely active on campus or have rigorous course loads; however, you get out of the experience as much as you put in. If you elect to run for a position on the Executive Board, your time commitment will be much greater than if you have a less intensive leadership role or refrain completely from accepting a position. It is reasonable to expect that you will need to commit to a minimum of 4-5 hours per week for Beta, which can vary depending on events occuring that week, the time of year, and the position you hold in the fraternity.

Q: What are the financial requirements of each member?
A: The financial requirements vary by semester, as membership rises and falls (the more members, the lower the dues per member). There are some one-time costs for membership, which will be paid by new members during their first semester. For a more detailed breakdown of costs associated with membership, click here.

Q: Okay, I'm interested in joining. Now what?
A: That's great! We are excited to meet you and get to know you better. The easiest way to indicate your interest to us is to complete the short Recruitment Interest Form, and someone will be in touch with you very soon!

Q: What if I have a question that isn't listed here?
A: Ask any Beta listed on the Collegiate Members page, or Contact Us via this website.
